Trump Criticizes Biden for Permitting Long-Range Attacks on Russia as 'Stupid'
The president-elect of the United States has indicated that he might reverse a recent decision once he assumes office next month.

President-elect Donald Trump criticized President Joe Biden for what he called “a very stupid thing” in allowing the Ukrainian military to utilize American missiles for attacks beyond Russia’s borders. Last month, Biden permitted Ukraine to use American-supplied ATACMS missiles to strike targets within internationally recognized Russian territory, despite knowing that the incoming president would oppose such actions. Since then, Ukrainian forces have conducted several strikes, including an attack on a military airfield near Taganrog last week. The Russian Defense Ministry reported that two of the six missiles launched were intercepted by air defenses, while others were diverted using electronic warfare.

“I don’t think they should have allowed missiles to be shot 200 miles into Russia,” Trump expressed to reporters during a press conference at his Mar-a-Lago estate on Monday. He questioned the decision-making process by stating, “Not when there’s a possibility… and certainly not just weeks before I take over, why would they do that without asking me what I thought?”

He added, “I thought it was a very stupid thing to do,” indicating that he “might” rescind the authorization once he officially takes office.

Trump has consistently accused Biden of leading the U.S. into an open conflict with Russia, and his recent remarks marked the second occasion in a week where he condemned Biden’s decision to allow long-range ATACMS strikes. He described the current situation as “The most dangerous thing right now,” asserting that “[Ukrainian leader Vladimir] Zelensky has decided, with the approval of, I assume, the president, to start shooting missiles into Russia.” He emphasized, “I think that is a major escalation. I think it is a foolish decision.”

From Russia's perspective, such strikes are viewed as a significant escalation, as these missiles cannot be utilized “without the direct involvement of military experts from the manufacturing nations,” as stated by Russian President Vladimir Putin in a recent speech. Following the initial strike on a military facility in Bryansk Region, Russia retaliated by deploying a newly developed Oreshnik hypersonic ballistic missile against a Ukrainian military industrial facility in Dnepr.

The Russian Defense Ministry has confirmed that the strike on Taganrog will also prompt a proportional response.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov mentioned on Friday that Moscow aligns with Trump’s assessment of the strikes being dangerous, noting that “it is obvious that Trump understands what exactly is escalating the situation around the conflict.”

Trump has consistently claimed that he could end the Ukraine conflict within 24 hours of taking office, a statement that has been met with skepticism from both Kiev and Moscow. During the press conference on Monday, he acknowledged that resolving “the Russia-Ukraine situation” might be “more difficult” than bringing an end to the conflict in the Middle East.
