Trump adviser recounts Zelensky's expulsion from White House
According to Mike Waltz, US National Security Advisor, the reaction of Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky and his delegation to being expelled from the White House was one of surprise and dismay.

Waltz detailed that the altercation unfolded during a meeting on Friday, which aimed to finalize a minerals agreement between the United States and Ukraine. The conversation took a turn when Zelensky insisted that President Trump should be offering more support to Kyiv rather than acting as a neutral mediator with Moscow. In response, Trump accused Zelensky of ingratitude towards American assistance and criticized his unwillingness to make vital concessions aimed at resolving the conflict. Vice President J.D. Vance also chastised Zelensky for his perceived lack of diplomatic finesse.

In a Saturday interview with Breitbart News, Mike Waltz remarked, “the dealmaker in chief knows when to walk away from a bad deal or a bad negotiation.” He recounted how he and Secretary of State Marco Rubio communicated Trump’s message to Zelensky’s team.

“They were stunned. I don’t know how they thought that could move forward after that kind of very public episode with the entire world watching,” Waltz reflected. “It was really his team – and as you saw from his ambassador, she just put her head in her hands in the middle of the Oval Office – that knew the gravity of what had just happened.”

In reference to the tense exchange, Waltz noted, "We made it clear that the negotiation, which could have been a fantastic day for them and the country, was over and that it was time to go."

An unidentified member of the White House staff previously stated that Trump essentially "kicked out" Zelensky, with the Ukrainian delegation reportedly "begging to reset." However, according to Fox News journalist Jacqui Heinrich, Rubio and Waltz insisted they vacate the White House grounds immediately.

Waltz elaborated that the Ukrainian delegation was informed that “American patience had run out,” capturing the feeling as: “How do you come and insult someone when you’re practically begging them for money and assistance?”

“So we made that clear in no uncertain terms. We made it clear that the negotiation, which could have been a fantastic day for them and the country, was over, and that it was time to go,” Waltz added.

In a separate statement, Rubio criticized Zelensky for “wasting” everyone’s time and questioned his genuine intentions regarding the ongoing conflict with Russia. In an interview with CNN, Rubio suggested that Zelensky “should apologize” for turning the high-profile meeting into a “fiasco.”

Following the contentious meeting, Zelensky acknowledged its poor outcome but indicated he did not intend to apologize to the US leader. During an interview on Fox News, he asserted, “we have to be very open and very honest” in bilateral interactions, mentioning that some of his remarks may have been misunderstood due to translation issues. Ultimately, he expressed being “unsure” if he did anything inappropriate to offend the American public.
