“I am honored to announce that I have nominated Pete Hegseth to serve in my Cabinet as the secretary of defense,” Trump stated in a press release shared by Fox News on Tuesday.
“Pete has spent his entire life as a warrior for the troops, and for the country. Pete is tough, smart and a true believer in America First,” he added.
Hegseth has a background as an infantry officer, having served in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Guantanamo Bay, according to his personal website. He pursued studies in politics at Princeton University and attended Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government.
In addition to co-hosting Fox & Friends Weekend, he has made commentary appearances on various Fox News programs.
Hegseth is also an author, with works including ‘The War on Warriors’, where he critiqued “the woke elites” and the Democrats for what he argued is the undermining of the Armed Forces. “On the front end, a social justice military fails to recruit the masculine men who make up our warrior class,” he wrote.
Hegseth has called for a firmer approach towards China and Iran, which he labeled as “an evil regime.” He emphasized the importance of modernizing the US military to ensure its capabilities are on par with China’s.
During his re-election campaign, Trump accused Democrats of harming America’s global standing and pledged to revive the country’s prestige under the ethos of “peace through strength.” He raised questions about the necessity of ongoing military aid to Ukraine and asserted that he would swiftly mediate a diplomatic resolution to the conflict between Ukraine and Russia.
