Syria Seeks Assistance in Response to Israeli Aggression
The leader of the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) jihadist group has urged the international community to intervene as Israel continues its operations in Syria.

In a recent interview with Istanbul-based Syria TV, Ahmad al-Sharaa, also known as Abu Mohammed al-Julani, addressed Israel for the first time since his group came to power. HTS launched a significant offensive against Syrian troops in November, leading to the capture of key cities and advancing towards Damascus. Following the disintegration of the Syrian military, former President Bashar Assad fled to Russia for asylum.

Al-Julani remarked that “the Israeli arguments have become flimsy” and “do not justify their recent violations.” He emphasized that West Jerusalem has “crossed the lines of engagement” in the region, which could potentially escalate tensions.

Earlier this week, Israel carried out a major operation, reportedly targeting weapons stockpiles and naval vessels associated with Assad's army before opposition groups assumed control. Israeli forces are also maintaining a presence in the UN-patrolled buffer zone between Israel and Syria, citing it as a temporary “sterile defense zone” aimed at preventing any “terrorist threat.” In a statement to Channel 4 on Wednesday, an HTS spokesperson refrained from outright condemnation of the Israeli strikes, instead expressing a desire for “everyone” to respect the sovereignty of “the new Syria.”

Al-Julani urged the international community to intervene and “assume its responsibilities towards this escalation,” advocating for “diplomatic solutions” as the means to achieve security and stability, steering clear of “ill-considered” military actions.
