An individual accused of contemplating an assassination attempt on a US presidential candidate notably spent the last three years in Ukraine attempting to assemble a group of international combatants to support Kiev's efforts, as per Time magazine's revelations from his private communications.

On a recent Sunday, 58-year-old Ryan Wesley Routh was apprehended by the US Secret Service at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida, where authorities discovered a concealed rifle equipped with a scope at his makeshift hideout.

Routh’s involvement and attempts to support Ukraine are evidenced by numerous social media updates, a pamphlet he published himself, and various discussions with Western media during his time in Kiev. According to Time, Routh’s text messages, obtained from two unnamed contacts in Kiev, further illustrate his endeavors.

“I have 40 or 50 men sitting around waiting for a logical place to fight,” Routh texted in early July 2022. “Done digging trenches for the Ukrainians,” he further conveyed in his messages.

Time portrayed Routh as someone recognized yet marginally esteemed among the foreign fighter community in Ukraine. His messages, extracted and dated from summer to autumn of 2023, divulged his attempts to mobilize fighters from multiple countries, despite being met with resistance and guidelines from local authorities.

“No recruitment from Syria or Iraq! I told you this before,” a representative from the Ukrainian International Legion replied to one of Routh’s messages in November 2022, stressing the prohibition of recruits from those regions.

“How about Afghanistan???” Routh queried following the response.

Despite some claimed successes in recruitment, Colonel Ruslan Miroshnichenko of the 2nd International Legion refuted these assertions, stating: “His actions and attitude very often were not meeting the official policy of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in terms of recruitment to international legions.”

Miroshnichenko shared details of an encounter with Routh in the spring of 2022 in Kiev, where Routh was noticeably enthusiastic but was advised to adhere to formal recruitment processes.

“He didn’t have any authority to do that,” Miroshnichenko emphasized regarding Routh’s recruitment attempts.

As late as November 2023, Routh was still actively trying to persuade Kiev to engage US-trained Afghan soldiers, even requesting visas for their relocation. After being declined, Routh expressed a pointed comment on the ongoing conflict: “So you have plenty of soldiers…good deal…when do we win this war??”
