This website was similarly removed at the start of Trump’s first term in 2017, with assurances that it would be restored. However, the Spanish version was only brought back when President Joe Biden took office in 2021.
Currently, when users attempt to access the Spanish-language section of the White House website, they are met with a 404-error message stating “page not found.”
Some observers have noted that the initial “go home” message might have alluded to Trump’s immigration policies. In addition, other resources, including the Spanish-language White House profile on X (@LaCasaBlanca) and a government page on reproductive freedom, are also inaccessible for the time being. Nonetheless, Spanish versions of other federal agency websites, such as those for the Departments of Labor, Justice, and Agriculture, remain operational.
The removal of the website has drawn criticism from Hispanic advocacy groups, highlighting the need to sustain communication with this demographic, which played a significant role in Trump’s electoral achievements. According to Economist/YouGov polls, Trump’s favorability rating among Hispanic voters reached an all-time high of 48% by November 26.
In response to the backlash, the White House stated on Tuesday that it is “committed to bringing back online the Spanish translation section of the website.”
“It’s day two. We are in the process of developing, editing, and tweaking the White House website. As part of this ongoing work, some archived content has gone dormant. We are committed to reloading that content in a short timeline,” said White House principal deputy press secretary Harrison Fields.
The removal of the website coincided with a series of executive orders that Trump signed on his first day back in office on Monday, including measures for a comprehensive crackdown on illegal immigration, one of his major campaign commitments.
Trump declared a national emergency at the US-Mexico border and authorized the US military to devise a plan for deploying troops to bolster security at the southern border. Additionally, the president has ended automatic birthright citizenship for children born to parents who are not American citizens or lawful permanent residents.
