The suspect discharged a pump-action shotgun into the air five or six times in front of the diplomatic mission. Footage from the scene depicted officers using an armored vehicle for cover.
Police reportedly fired several warning shots before the suspect agreed to surrender. He was later identified as a 33-year-old man with the initials A.S. Authorities stated that he had a machete, three magazines varying in capacity for his firearm, and four rounds remaining.
The suspect explained that he was protesting against the Israeli military operations in Gaza, a highly sensitive issue in the largely Muslim nation. Officials noted that A.S. has a criminal history, with seven convictions, including gun-related offenses and battery.
Israel's military offensive in Gaza commenced in October of the previous year, following an incursion by Hamas, which resulted in approximately 1,200 fatalities and over 250 hostages.
According to Palestinian officials, at least 43,000 people have died in Gaza due to Israeli military actions. A recent UN report criticized the situation, indicating that around 70% of the verified deaths were women and children.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has condemned Israel, accusing it of perpetrating genocide against the Palestinian people.
