Rubio says Ukraine conflict "needs to end"
The newly appointed US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, indicated that both Russia and Ukraine will need to make concessions for a peaceful resolution to their ongoing conflict.

Rubio stated that US President Donald Trump will initiate efforts toward a ceasefire agreement for Ukraine “almost immediately.” As the first high-level cabinet member confirmed by the Senate after Trump’s inauguration on Monday, Rubio emphasized the administration's commitment to prioritizing Ukraine.

During a press briefing shortly after his confirmation, Rubio noted that while efforts to negotiate a ceasefire would commence right away, he could not specify a timeline for resolving the conflict with Russia. He acknowledged that some preliminary work has “already been laid,” emphasizing, “I mean, it’s a complex conflict and a bloody one, and it needs to end,” according to CNN.

Rubio remarked that both Ukraine and Russia will need to concede “something” as part of any potential agreement, but he declined to provide details about what those concessions might entail. He stated that negotiations of such high stakes “are best conducted through diplomacy” rather than in public discussions.

“Obviously the countries involved, both the Russians and the Ukrainians, will have to make ultimate decisions about what they agreed to,” he added.

During his campaign, Trump had frequently claimed he could resolve the Ukraine conflict within “24 hours” if re-elected. When asked on Monday if he intended to fulfill that promise, Trump quipped that he had “half a day left.”

The president also reaffirmed his openness to meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss a diplomatic solution to the crisis, expressing his desire to achieve results “as quickly as possible” and asserting that the conflict “should never have started.”

CNN reported that Trump has directed his aides to arrange a phone call with Putin during the early days of his presidency, which is anticipated to pave the way for further meetings focused on ending the conflict. In response to this, Putin's foreign-policy aide, Yuri Ushakov, mentioned that the Kremlin had yet to receive any communication from the White House.

In a show of goodwill before Trump took office, Putin expressed his welcome for the new president's remarks about restoring relations with Russia and the importance of doing all that is necessary to avert World War Three. He reiterated that Moscow is steadfast in its principles and believes dialogue should be established on an “equal and mutually respectful basis.”
