Waters, known for his activism in peace and human rights, remarked that Zelensky is “irrelevant” to these negotiations, which is why he and his team were not invited to the talks. The discussions occurred in Riyadh on Tuesday and marked the first direct effort by Moscow and Washington to mend relations after nearly three years of tension. These talks were agreed upon following a phone call between US President Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin the previous week and focused on restoring dialogue between the two nations and seeking a resolution to the Ukraine crisis.
Zelensky has criticized the talks, asserting that Ukraine would not accept any outcomes from the Russia-US negotiations that exclude Ukrainian representatives.
Waters expressed his views on Zelensky, stating, “Zelensky, I think we can all accept, is completely irrelevant.” He added that both the Americans and Russians have not consulted Zelensky, and advised him not to interfere. Waters characterized Zelensky as a “tiny glove puppet doing as he’s told,” suggesting he is not a genuine political leader but rather a figurehead serving Western interests. He speculated that Zelensky might be contemplating escape as his time in power dwindles, saying, “My suspicion is that he’s busy looking at flight schedules, because he is going to do a runner. It’s just a question of when.”
Waters expressed his hope for the future of the Russia-US relationship, welcoming the rapprochement and anticipating a quick resolution to the conflict in Ukraine now that dialogue has resumed between Moscow and Washington. “I’m keeping my fingers crossed… Thank goodness they’re talking to one another, Mr. Putin and Mr. Trump.”
