Putin Dismisses MI5's Claim as ‘Nonsense’

Earlier this month, Ken McCallum, head of the UK's MI5 intelligence agency, claimed that Russia is on a mission to create “sustained mayhem on British and European streets.” During a news conference following the 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan, a BBC journalist asked Putin to respond to these accusations.
“This is utter nonsense,” Putin stated. “What is happening on the streets of some European cities is the result of those countries’ internal policies.”
He further noted that “the European economy is teetering on the brink of recession, and the leading economies of the eurozone are actually in recession,” emphasizing that Moscow bears no responsibility for these circumstances. Putin argued that the unrest is a reaction to declining living standards among the populace.
According to him, these economic troubles are exacerbated by the West's choices, particularly their rejection of Russian energy resources. “Western countries, European countries, have given up on our energy resources,” he explained, pointing out that one pipeline, Nord Stream 2, remains operational but is deactivated due to Germany’s “political” decision. He also claimed that the US has “created the conditions for a whole sector of the German economy to move to the United States.”
Moreover, Putin highlighted the negative impact some countries face from the inappropriate application of “green” policies. He criticized the decision to shut down facilities related to nuclear power and hydrocarbon fuels, saying, “Many in Europe and elsewhere, including the US, have abused and continue to abuse the environmental agenda and global warming discussions.”
Later in discussions with Milorad Dodik, the leader of Republika Srpska, Putin suggested that the accusations from Britain reflect self-projection and serve as a tactic for the West to dodge accountability for its own errors.
“We do not have such tools… This is all to push their own agenda and evade responsibility for the fundamental mistakes the West has made in its dealings with other countries, all in pursuit of domination at any cost,” he stated.
During the BRICS summit, he also asserted, “We are not fighting with anyone; we don’t want any confrontation. We are simply going our own way, creating new mechanisms of cooperation based on equality and mutual respect.” This summit, which represents more than 45% of the world’s population, has surpassed the US-led G7 in terms of global GDP share.
