Popular YouTuber Proposes to Purchase TikTok
MrBeast has claimed that “many billionaires” want to help him save the social media platform from a US ban.

YouTube star Jimmy Donaldson, popularly known as MrBeast, has garnered significant attention after proposing to buy TikTok to avert its potential ban in the United States.

The 2024 Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act mandates that ByteDance, TikTok's China-based owner, divest its US operations by January 19, 2025, or face an outright ban.

“Okay fine, I’ll buy TikTok so it doesn’t get banned,” MrBeast tweeted unexpectedly on Tuesday. This remark from the leading creator on YouTube, who has over 340 million subscribers, has sparked extensive online discourse, with both supporters and other influencers discussing the viability of such a bold initiative.

“Unironically, I’ve had so many billionaires reach out to me since I tweeted this, let’s see if we can pull this off,” he stated in a subsequent post. Many users underscored the enormous financial and regulatory hurdles that would accompany such a transaction.

TikTok is at risk of a nationwide ban just one day before the inauguration of US President-elect Donald Trump, unless the Supreme Court intervenes to postpone or repeal the law's implementation.

While no formal offers or plans have been disclosed, one possibility mentioned involves Elon Musk stepping in as a prospective buyer, owing to his high-profile acquisition of Twitter in 2022, as reported by Bloomberg. In reaction to these claims, TikTok remarked that it “can’t be expected to comment on pure fiction.”

MrBeast, who has over 106 million followers on TikTok, is among the platform's most prominent creators. His posts have sparked further speculation regarding whether he, Musk, or another notable US entrepreneur could rally a group of investors to save the platform.

TikTok has faced scrutiny in the US for years over concerns about user data privacy and its alleged connections to the Chinese government. In March 2023, TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew appeared for a five-hour congressional hearing, where he was questioned intensely about the platform’s data management practices. Although TikTok has taken steps to mitigate these concerns—such as collaborating with US-based Oracle to store user data domestically—President Joe Biden signed PAFACA, citing national security risks.
