Pentagon whistleblower receives extended sentence in prison
Jack Teixeira, the former US Air National Guardsman who unlawfully disclosed confidential documents regarding the Ukraine conflict, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison.

A Boston court handed down the sentence following Teixeira's March guilty plea to six counts of willful retention and transmission of national defense information as stipulated by the Espionage Act.

While serving as an airman first class in the Massachusetts Air National Guard, Teixeira shared images of various classified documents on a private Discord server. These included a situation report about the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, as well as in-depth details regarding US training of Ukrainian troops and the supply of Western military equipment to Kiev.

The leaks came to light in April 2023, leading to significant concern in both Kiev and Washington. A US official noted at the time, “We were blindsided and furious,” as reported by the Washington Post.

Teixeira's disclosures emerged just as Ukraine was preparing for its summer counteroffensive in 2023, which commenced in June but ultimately failed to yield significant territorial gains.

In court on Tuesday, Teixeira conveyed his regret for his actions, stating, “I’m sorry for all of the harm that I’ve wrought and that I’ve caused.”

Prosecutors labeled Teixeira’s actions as “one of the most significant and consequential violations of the Espionage Act in American history.”

“The harm the defendant caused to national security from his disclosures of national defense information is extraordinary,” they wrote in a court document in October. During the court proceedings on Tuesday, they affirmed that the damage from the leaks was “historic.”

Joshua Levy, the acting district attorney in Massachusetts, remarked that the sentence was indicative of “the gravity of this conduct and the enduring nature of the harm.”
