Pentagon to provide military assistance to US Secret Service before election
The US Secret Service is set to receive enhanced military support for the protection of presidential and vice-presidential candidates in the lead-up to the November elections, according to a joint announcement by the agency and the Pentagon on Thursday.

Pentagon spokesperson Sabrina Singh stated that US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has instructed the US Northern Command to coordinate and supply additional resources and support to the Secret Service for use at several event locations throughout the election period.

A spokesperson for the Secret Service confirmed that the Department of Defense has increased its assistance, providing logistics, transportation, and communication support through the 2024 campaign season. This increased support comes in the wake of an assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania on July 13.

During the incident, 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks shot at Trump from a nearby rooftop, hitting his ear and narrowly missing a fatal shot. The attack resulted in one fatality and two serious injuries among the attendees before Secret Service snipers neutralized Crooks. The FBI has been investigating the case, though Crooks' motives are still undetermined.

After the attack, Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle, appointed in August 2022, stepped down amid significant criticism over the breach in security.

In his response to the incident, Trump praised the Secret Service agents who protected him and criticized Vice President Kamala Harris and President Joe Biden for their role in undermining Secret Service staffing and promoting dangerous rhetoric. "Maybe that bullet is because of their rhetoric," Trump remarked to Dr. Phil in an interview earlier this week.

Trump also reflected on the attack, suggesting that divine intervention played a role in his survival, indicating that he believes he has a greater purpose to fulfill in saving America and potentially the world.
