"Pelosi 'privately fields battleground Dem calls' while working to address Biden crisis"
A House Democrat worried about President Joe Biden's impact on the 2024 reelection campaign recently sought advice from a key figure within the party: Nancy Pelosi.

The representative, who holds a competitive seat and spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss confidential exchanges, revealed that Pelosi was thorough in her inquiry about district-level polling data and showed openness to the concerns that Biden may not secure a victory in November. Following their discussion, the representative felt strongly that Pelosi was of the opinion Biden should not run for re-election.

During their conversation, the former speaker indicated her willingness to converse with other congressional members who had similar worries, although she specified she wouldn't proactively start such discussions.

This interaction is indicative of Pelosi's influential, albeit discreet role in steering her party through what appears to be a political predicament surrounding Biden.

Pelosi has not disclosed her intentions regarding the insights she has been gathering from concerned Democrats. Nevertheless, many of her colleagues view her as a crucial figure, capable of delivering significant messages, particularly as she recently stepped down from her leadership post to allow for new leadership under House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries.

“She’s the political voice of the Democratic caucus right now,” another House Democrat who has been in talks with Pelosi mentioned, emphasizing her unmatched capability to evaluate the potential repercussions of Biden's candidacy on the party.

This person also praised Pelosi’s dedication to securing a Democratic majority over the last two decades and noted her efforts to maintain deference to the current leadership, reflected in her decision to avoid overshadowing Jeffries.

Jeffries himself held a discreet meeting with Biden last week to discuss widespread concerns among his caucus members. While details of the meeting remain undisclosed by Jeffries, he issued a statement the following day which was perceived by many as an effort to support continued critiques of the president from within the party.

Longtime acquaintances and political allies are convinced that Pelosi is smartly navigating the current political landscape, likened by some to playing "3-D chess." Her strategic aptitude was evidenced during her tenure as the leader of the Democratic caucus, where she handled significant events like the impeachment trials of Donald Trump and the passage of major legislation including the Affordable Care Act.

Recently, notable shifts have occurred, such as numerous Democrats rallying to delay Biden's nomination process, an initiative led by Pelosi supporter Rep. Jared from California. Additionally, it was uncovered that another close ally of Pelosi, Rep. Adam Schiff, also from California, expressed concerns at a private fundraiser about Biden adversely affecting the Democrats' chances to reclaim the House.

Reflecting on Pelosi's influence and recent actions, a Democratic aide remarked, “Nancy Pelosi has one of the strongest cases to make. She stepped down and passed the torch.”
