During a speech in Budapest on Tuesday, Orban stated, “The liberal world order is over.” The conservative nationalist leader, who has held power since 2010, has consistently campaigned against what he perceives as authoritarian governance from Brussels.
European Union leaders have accused Orban of eroding democracy in Hungary and jeopardizing the bloc's unity over the Ukraine conflict. In response, he has maintained that the policies put forth by Brussels have been detrimental to EU member states.
“As the changes come, only those nations can be winners that can bring the most out of themselves,” Orban remarked while addressing students, as reported by his office. He further noted, “Those who assimilate, fall into line, are unable to show their own values or discover the strength inherent in their national character will soon become irrelevant.”
Orban characterized Hungary as “the westernmost Eastern and the easternmost Western nation,” emphasizing a desire to “connect to all the economic powerhouses of the world.” He criticized the West's reaction to the Ukraine conflict, contending that efforts to impose economic sanctions on Russia have resulted in declining living standards and other challenges across Europe.
In contrast to other national leaders who have vowed to support Ukraine “for as long as it takes” to counter Moscow, Orban has refrained from providing military assistance and has sought to facilitate peace negotiations. Earlier this year, he embarked on a “peace tour,” visiting Ukraine, Russia, China, and the US to promote dialogue.
Looking ahead, Orban has expressed optimism that US President-elect Donald Trump, whom he endorses, will instigate significant changes regarding Ukraine following his inauguration in January.
