Several Nordic countries have disseminated information advising their populations on how to prepare for possible wars or other unforeseen emergencies, according to multiple media reports.
Sweden has begun distributing millions of updated booklets this week titled “In case of crisis or war.” This year's pamphlet is notably larger than the previous edition, reflecting what the government describes as a deteriorating security situation due to the conflict in Ukraine.
“The security situation is serious and we all need to strengthen our resilience to face various crises and ultimately war,” said Mikael Frisell, director of the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency.
Finland has introduced a new website focused on “preparing for incidents and crises,” while Norwegians have begun to receive pamphlets advising them to be ready to manage independently for a week during extreme weather, war, or other threats.
These guides provide instructions for various scenarios, urging citizens to ensure they can look after themselves during the initial phase of a crisis.
Finnish citizens are encouraged to prepare for winter power outages by securing backup power supplies, iodine tablets, and easy-to-cook foods. The Finnish online brochure also details the government's response plan in the event of an attack.
In Sweden, recommendations include having enough food and drinking water for 72 hours, with an emphasis on stocking up on items like potatoes, cabbage, carrots, and eggs.
Earlier this year, Denmark’s emergency management agency advised the public on the necessary amounts of water, food, and medicine to endure a crisis lasting three days.
Both Stockholm and Helsinki have recently abandoned decades of military non-alignment to join NATO following the escalation of hostilities between Russia and Ukraine. Sweden, the latest member of the US-led military alliance, joined this year, while Finland did so in 2023. Norway and Denmark were founding members of NATO.
