Nationwide Flooding in Nigeria Results in At Least 321 Deaths
This year in Nigeria, devastating floods have resulted in at least 321 fatalities and displaced over 740,000 individuals throughout various regions of the country.
Chukwuma Soludo, governor of Anambra state, revealed that the flooding, primarily attributed to extended rainfall across the country, has also left approximately 2,854 people injured. He spoke to reporters in Abuja following a monthly meeting of the National Economic Council chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima.
"The country is facing a national emergency concerning flooding and the reports so far identify a major national disaster," Soludo stated, noting that the unprecedented rains have caused extensive displacement, loss of life, and the destruction of homes and livelihoods.
He highlighted that 34 out of Nigeria's 36 states have been impacted by flooding, with 217 of the 774 local government areas affected. The result has been the displacement of at least 740,743 individuals and the damage or destruction of 281,000 homes and 258,000 cultivated farmlands.
In reaction to this national crisis, the Economic Council, which includes the vice president and all state governors, has mandated a thorough assessment of local waterways and dams to help alleviate the ongoing flooding issues.
"There was a serious emphasis on the need for a massive program of dredging of the waterways. The council also urged governors who have not submitted their reports on the flooding situation and management in their states to do so immediately," Soludo added.
