Technology mogul Elon Musk has declared his intention to take action against the Brazilian government, demanding the return of assets belonging to his enterprises X and SpaceX. "Unless the Brazilian government returns the illegally seized property of X and SpaceX, we will seek reciprocal seizure of government assets too," Musk asserted on his social media platform. He also made a pointed remark towards the Brazilian President Luis Ignacio Lula da Silva: "Hope Lula enjoys flying commercial."
This legal confrontation escalated following a decision by the Brazilian Supreme Court last week. The court ordered an immediate halt to X's operations and established a daily penalty of 50,000 Brazilian reals for anyone attempting to bypass the ban with a VPN. Major platforms Google and Apple were also given a five-day deadline to eliminate X from their app stores, a decision confirmed by a federal supreme court panel on Monday.
In addition, the court took measures against Starlink, a subsidiary of Musk’s company SpaceX, by freezing its accounts to secure the payment of fines due to the company's failure to appoint a new legal representative in Brazil for X.
The dispute initially flared up in April when Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes mandated that X remove several accounts linked to ex-President Jair Bolsonaro, labeling the account holders as "digital militants" who propagate "disinformation."
Musk has consistently resisted these orders, stating that complying would breach Brazilian statutes. He has threatened to halt company operations in Brazil, arguing that the directives amounted to censorship, which his companies could not support.
Musk sharply criticized the freezing of Starlink’s accounts as an "absolutely illegal action" executed without proper legal proceedings, emphasizing the independence of X and SpaceX as distinct entities with separate ownership.
Amid these financial constraints, Musk has vowed to offer free internet service to Starlink's customers in Brazil while the company's assets remain inaccessible.
Recent developments indicate further complications, as a senior official reported that Anatel, the Brazilian telecommunications regulator, might impose penalties on Starlink for non-compliance with the shutdown directive. Starlink risks losing its operational license in Brazil, as it is currently the sole firm defying the order.
