Musk Suggests Rebranding the English Channel
Tech billionaire Elon Musk has proposed that the US change the name of the English Channel to “the George Washington Channel” in honor of the first American president. This suggestion followed US President Donald Trump's recent actions, which included renaming the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America.

On Saturday, Musk shared a post on his X platform, where he suggested a “new name for the water that separates England and France.” He accompanied his post with a satellite image of the channel, marked with “The George Washington Channel” overlaid on the strait.

While Musk’s post appears to be made in jest, it comes shortly after Trump, a close political ally of Musk, ordered the renaming of the Gulf of Mexico and reinstated the Alaskan peak Denali to its former name, Mount McKinley. The US Interior Department confirmed these changes on Friday.

In addition to these actions, Trump has frequently expressed his desire to acquire Greenland, a Danish autonomous territory, which would significantly extend the US Arctic coastline. “I think we're going to have it,” he remarked to reporters on Saturday following a contentious phone call with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen earlier in the week.

Trump has also mentioned several times recently that Canada “should be a state” of the US.

Historically, the English Channel was known by the Romans as ‘Mare Britannicum,’ or the ‘Sea of the Britons.’ It has been referred to as the English Channel since the Middle Ages, though in France, it is called ‘La Manche,’ meaning ‘The Sleeve,’ due to its shape.
