Musk states that Treasury and DOGE are implementing new reporting requirements for all government transactions
The payments will feature a newly established categorization code along with a "rationale" for the money spent.
According to a post on X, the social media platform he owns, the new protocol will implement a “payment categorization code” aimed at enhancing auditing efforts.
Musk further detailed that any payments must now include a rationale in a designated comment field, asserting that while they “are not yet applying ANY judgment to this rationale,” the requirement for a rationale remains mandatory. He emphasized that the do-not-pay list—which identifies individuals or companies that should not receive government funds—should be updated “at least weekly, if not daily.”
“The above super obvious and necessary changes are being implemented by existing, long-time career government employees, not anyone from @DOGE,” Musk remarked. “It is ridiculous that these changes didn’t exist already!”
It remains uncertain how significantly the new requirements will affect the government payment process, as the Treasury Department has not yet responded to inquiries for clarification.
Additionally, Musk claimed that staff at the Treasury indicated there was approximately $50 billion in “unequivocal and obvious fraud” concerning entitlement payments, although he did not provide further details to support this assertion.
These changes come amid Musk’s increasing influence within the Treasury Department with his DOGE initiative, which has sought access to sensitive Treasury records. However, a federal judge has temporarily barred DOGE—and Musk—from accessing these records while legal proceedings are ongoing.
