Following revelations that the man who drove into a crowded Christmas market in Magdeburg was a foreign national with a residence permit, Musk called for Chancellor Olaf Scholz's immediate resignation. A tragic incident occurred on Friday when a 50-year-old man drove a rented car 400 meters into a crowd, resulting in at least two fatalities, including a child, and dozens of injuries. Authorities have since identified the suspect as a Saudi Arabian doctor who moved to Germany in 2006 and held a permanent residence permit.
While the driver’s motives are still under investigation, and authorities have not yet officially labeled the incident as terrorism, the initial reports of the suspect's foreign status have sparked significant criticism of the German government’s refugee and migrant policies.
Musk took to X to express his outrage, stating, “Scholz should resign immediately. Incompetent fool,” in response to the Chancellor’s condolences extended to the victims and their families regarding “something bad” that occurred in Magdeburg.
After another user pointed fingers at left-wing European leaders for enabling the “mass migration of extremists who hate Christians,” Musk added, “Those who allowed this are traitors!” He also reacted to unverified allegations about Berlin's refusal to extradite the suspect to Riyadh by remarking, “Wow, this is insane. Whoever refused to extradite a murderer deserves to be punished severely!”
Musk continued his criticism, asserting that “only the AfD can save Germany,” which led some Berlin officials to accuse him of interfering in elections.
German Health Minister Karl Lauterbach expressed concern over Musk's influence, stating, “It is very disturbing the way in which the platform X, which I use very intensively myself, is increasingly being used to spread the political positions and goals of Mr. Musk,” and urged German authorities to monitor activities on the platform closely.
Christian Lindner, head of the Free Democratic Party, responded to Musk by saying, “Elon, I’ve initiated a policy debate inspired by ideas from you and Milei. While migration control is crucial for Germany, the AfD stands against freedom and business – it’s a far-right extremist party. Don’t rush to conclusions from afar.”
In the meantime, Scholz indirectly responded to Musk during a press conference, emphasizing that Germany upholds freedom of speech, stating, “That also applies to multimillionaires. Freedom of speech also means that you’re able to say things that aren’t right and do not contain good political advice.”
Scholz faces mounting pressure, having lost a confidence vote in parliament on Monday, which could lead to snap elections early next year. He has been at the helm of the German government since December 2021, leading a "traffic light" coalition with the Greens and the Free Democratic Party. However, the coalition began to crumble last month when Scholz dismissed his finance minister, Christian Lindner, over economic and financial policy disagreements.
