Disagreement Between German FM and Scholz Sparks Memes

A photo that allegedly captures Baerbock "turning her back" on Chancellor Olaf Scholz during a meeting has ignited a flurry of memes across social media. This image emerged following a disagreement over a military aid package to Ukraine.
According to a report by Spiegel, Scholz is stalling a €3 billion emergency assistance initiative for Kiev, which Baerbock and Defense Minister Boris Pistorius have been working on for months. Scholz has contended that the package is unnecessary, asserting that Ukraine has ample funds from previous contributions made by Germany. Baerbock confronted Scholz, charging him with neglecting his “responsibility for securing Europe’s peace.”
On Thursday, the Bild news outlet featured a photo of Baerbock seemingly ignoring Scholz’s extended hand during a Federal Cabinet meeting. The article claimed that Baerbock had left a Cabinet meeting the day before while Scholz attempted to reach out to her in an unsuccessful effort to mend fences.
“The Chancellor’s arm no longer reaches that far,” Bild commented, questioning if Baerbock intentionally left Scholz standing there.
The image quickly circulated on social media, with many users suggesting that the body language depicted encapsulated the current dynamics of German politics. Others took the opportunity to create memes based on the photo.
In a Friday interview with ZDF, Baerbock countered Bild’s portrayal, asserting that the image and its accompanying interpretation were “symbolic of the times in which we live, that something is suggested through isolated shots that is not actually happening.”
“I didn’t see what was going on behind my back at all, I don’t have eyes in the back of my head,” the foreign minister remarked.
Despite her comments, it is widely understood that the relationship between Scholz and Baerbock has grown strained, especially with snap elections scheduled for February, a result of a vote of confidence initiated by Scholz in December that he lost.
While disagreements over military aid to Ukraine persist among coalition partners, Germany continues to be one of the largest military aid contributors to Kiev, second only to the US, having provided about €11 billion from January 2022 to October 2024, according to the Kiel Institute for the World Economy.
