On Friday, Musk reacted to a post on X by podcast host Joe Rogan, who shared photographs from NASA’s Mars Global Surveyor depicting the square-like formation. “We should send astronauts to Mars to investigate!” the billionaire stated.
The image was taken in November 2001 but has gained renewed attention on social media recently. The square formation has led to various theories about its origin, with some suggesting it may be of artificial origin.

Nonetheless, similar structures have been noted on Mars in the past. The famous "Face on Mars," located in the Cydonia region, was initially believed to be artificial but was later clarified through enhanced imaging to be a natural formation.
Musk’s fascination with Martian anomalies aligns with his ongoing goal of colonizing the planet. He has consistently stressed that making life multiplanetary is critical for humanity's future, emphasizing the need to become a spacefaring civilization.
SpaceX is vigorously working on its Starship spacecraft, intended to transport both crew and cargo to distant locations, including Mars.
In December, Musk provided a potential timeline for SpaceX's missions to the Red Planet. He noted, “Uncrewed Starships landing on Mars in 2 years, perhaps with crewed versions passing near Mars, and crewed Starships heading there in 4 years are all possible,” on X.
He has also expressed a desire for “direct, rather than representative, democracy” on Mars if humans eventually settle there. Musk previously mentioned plans to transport one million people to Mars by 2050 using a fleet of Starships.
In a similar vein, U.S. President Donald Trump, in his inaugural address, announced ambitions for sending American astronauts to Mars, declaring: “We will pursue our manifest destiny into the stars, launching American astronauts to plant the Stars and Stripes on the planet Mars.”
