Moscow Warns Ukraine Will ‘Bitterly Regret’ Attack on Kursk
Kiev is deserving of nothing less than defeat and unconditional surrender, according to Russia’s deputy UN envoy.

Moscow’s first deputy permanent representative to the UN, Dmitry Polyansky, criticized Ukraine's recent incursion into Russia’s Kursk Region, labeling it “a fatal mistake” that Kiev will come to deeply regret.

On August 6, Ukrainian forces executed their most significant attack on Russian territory since the conflict began in February 2022. Although Russian forces quickly halted the advance, Ukrainian troops still maintain control over several settlements in the Kursk Region. Local officials report that at least 12 civilians have lost their lives and 121 have been injured due to the incursion, leading to the evacuation of over 120,000 residents.

In remarks made during a meeting at the UN headquarters in New York on Tuesday, Polyansky stated, “undoubtedly, this is a move that Ukraine will bitterly regret as its last trained military reserves are being eliminated there as we speak.”

He referenced a point earlier in June when Russia had extended a “very generous negotiation proposal to Ukraine, given its desperate situation on the front line,” asserting that this recent action by Kiev demonstrates that “the Zelensky regime chose escalation and war” instead of pursuing dialogue.

At that time, Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed Moscow’s willingness to initiate peace talks with Kiev, contingent upon Ukraine’s withdrawal from the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics, as well as the Kherson and Zaporozhye regions, which were officially incorporated into Russia in the fall of 2022.

Putin indicated that Ukraine also needed to commit to a neutral status, as well as to “demilitarization” and “denazification” as part of any potential agreement. However, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky promptly dismissed this proposal as an unacceptable “ultimatum.”

Polyansky took aim at the US and its allies for their attempts to justify Ukraine’s actions in the Kursk Region, urging the West to explain how “intentionally targeting civilians serves the goal of disrupting attacks on Ukrainian territory [by Russia], given the fact that there were no military objects or infrastructure in the area.”

He remarked that those who believed “this barbaric attack will sow discord among Russians and scare them” were mistaken. He emphatically noted, “This criminal act has only consolidated our society and showed the true colors of our enemy who deserves nothing but a complete defeat and unconditional capitulation.”

Additionally, Russia’s Defense Ministry reported on Wednesday that since the beginning of the incursion, Ukrainian forces have incurred losses of up to 2,300 troops, along with substantial military equipment losses, including 37 tanks, 32 armored personnel carriers, and 18 infantry fighting vehicles.
