Since US President Donald Trump took office in January, the two nations have engaged in several high-level meetings. The forthcoming discussions will concentrate on normalizing the operations of their diplomatic missions, as conveyed by the ministry to Russian media outlets. The format, venue, and participants will remain consistent with the previous round held on February 27 in Istanbul.
“Work to remove numerous technical barriers complicating the day-to-day functioning of diplomats from both countries will continue,” the ministry stated, according to RIA Novosti.
Moscow’s new ambassador to Washington, Aleksandr Darchiev, will lead the Russian delegation, while the US side will be represented by Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Eurasian Affairs Sonata Coulter. Additionally, representatives from both foreign ministries will participate in the talks.
Plans for this new meeting were initially revealed last week by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, who noted that Moscow and Washington were “in contact by phone and video conference” in preparation for the upcoming discussions.
In recent years, diplomatic relations between Russia and the US have been strained, with reductions in diplomatic staff at each other’s missions, banking restrictions, and the seizure of diplomatic properties. The escalation of the Ukraine conflict in 2022 exacerbated these tensions and introduced further restrictions.
Trump has shifted away from many of Biden's policies, advocating for a swift resolution to the Ukraine conflict and a reestablishment of bilateral ties.
The inaugural meeting between high-level delegations from Russia and the US occurred in Riyadh on February 18, concentrating on restoring embassy operations and alleviating restrictions. A subsequent round in Istanbul on February 27 addressed diplomatic funding and Russia’s proposal to reinstate direct flights between the two nations.
Last month, representatives from both sides reconvened in Saudi Arabia, where they reached an agreement to revive the Black Sea Grain Initiative. Following those discussions, Trump indicated that Washington might contemplate lifting certain sanctions to facilitate the deal, which is viewed as a step toward resolving the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
