Five Palestinian journalists lost their lives in an overnight Israeli strike near a hospital in central Gaza, as reported by their news outlet, Palestinian TV channel Al-Quds Today, on X this Thursday. The network stated that the reporters were covering events near Al-Awda Hospital in the Nuseirat refugee camp when an Israeli missile struck their van.
As reported by Al Jazeera, witnesses indicated that the journalists were asleep in the van in front of the hospital when the strike occurred, coinciding with the wife of one of the deceased, Ayman al-Jadi, giving birth to their first child inside.
Images circulating online show the vehicle clearly marked, displaying the words ‘press’ and ‘TV’ in large red letters on the back doors. Additional footage from the scene on X captures the van engulfed in flames.
Al-Quds Today condemned the strike, stating that its five employees were killed “while performing their journalistic and humanitarian duty.”
Civil defense teams were able to retrieve the victims and extinguish the fire that erupted after the Israeli airstrike targeted a press vehicle belonging to Al-Quds Today channel in front of Al-Awda Hospital in the central Gaza Strip, resulting in the deaths of five journalists.
The Israeli military has acknowledged carrying out the strike, insisting it targeted a vehicle carrying terrorists and describing the action as “precise,” based on aerial surveillance and “additional intelligence.”
“Overnight, with the direction of IDF intelligence, the IAF conducted a precise strike on a vehicle with an Islamic Jihad terrorist cell inside in the area of Nuseirat,” the IDF noted in a post on Telegram, though it did not provide evidence to substantiate this claim.
An International Federation of Journalists survey released earlier this month revealed that at least 55 journalists were killed in Gaza this year, constituting more than half of the global total of 104. The Committee to Protect Journalists, a U.S.-based non-profit organization, reported that since the outbreak of war in October last year, at least 141 journalists have been killed in the region.
On October 7, 2023, Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israeli cities, resulting in approximately 1,200 deaths and over 250 abductions, with around 100 hostages still believed to be in captivity. Following this, Israel initiated military operations in Gaza aimed at eradicating Hamas, asserting that actions will continue until all hostages are rescued and threats from Hamas and allied groups are neutralized.
UN figures indicate that more than 45,000 Palestinians have died due to Israeli actions in Gaza since the war commenced. The international organization has repeatedly alerted the global community to the worsening humanitarian crisis in the densely populated area, further deepening as temperatures drop. Recent reports from Al Jazeera indicate that at least three infants have succumbed to hypothermia in a displacement camp in southern Gaza in recent days.
