The US State Department has asked embassies around the globe to prepare for staff cuts, as per recent reports from ABC News and Reuters. Certain diplomatic missions have received directives to contemplate a 10% reduction in both US and locally employed staff, according to sources familiar with the situation.
Additionally, senior officials at the embassies have been tasked with creating detailed accounts of all personnel, which include tenured, untenured, and temporary staff, as stated by sources close to the matter.
This directive emerged shortly before President Donald Trump signed an executive order titled “One Voice for America’s Foreign Relations.” The order requires that State Department staff align with the administration's foreign policy goals and underscores the importance of maintaining an “exceptional workforce of patriots,” as specified in the executive order.
In line with budget reductions, the Trump administration is also contemplating the closure of several US consulates and diplomatic posts across the globe, with NBC News reporting that consulates in Europe, Canada, Mexico, and the Pacific Islands are under evaluation. Officials have been requested to assess the significance of these facilities concerning Trump’s America First agenda, taking into account diplomatic necessity and potential for other government activities such as military contacts and intelligence operations.
These actions are part of President Trump’s overarching plan to reshape the federal workforce. He has proposed a 10% reduction in government employees to streamline operations and cut costs. The administration has already begun extensive layoffs of probationary workers, affecting nearly all who have not yet gained civil service protection.
Furthermore, the administration has initiated the Department of Government Efficiency, led by billionaire Elon Musk, aiming to simplify federal operations and target a reduction of $2 trillion in expenditures from the federal budget. Musk has acknowledged that achieving this ambitious goal may be challenging but noted that it might be possible to secure up to $1 trillion in cuts.
Under its cost-cutting strategies, DOGE has made considerable reductions, including the dismantling of the United States Agency for International Development and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, along with imposing strict limitations on grants from the National Institutes of Health, as part of a broader effort to eliminate wasteful spending and enhance government efficiency.
