According to The Washington Post, Trump allegedly reached out to Putin after securing a new term as US president to share his thoughts on resolving the Ukraine crisis. However, Peskov refuted this claim on Monday, deeming it a “vivid example of the quality of information published by even some respectable outlets.”
Peskov emphasized, “This absolutely does not correspond to reality. This is pure fiction. This information is simply false.”
Additionally, the Ukrainian government previously dismissed The Washington Post's assertion that it had been informed in advance about the phone discussion and had consented to the exchange between the US and Russia. A spokesman for the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry told Reuters, “Reports that the Ukrainian side was informed in advance of the alleged call are false.”
During his campaign, Trump had asserted that he could resolve the Ukraine conflict “in 24 hours” if given a second term. He reportedly plans to use US military and financial support for Ukraine to pressure both Moscow and Kyiv toward a compromise.
Russia, which currently holds an advantage in the conflict, has indicated that it will only agree to a resolution that addresses the fundamental issues underpinning the Ukraine crisis, including NATO's expansion in Europe and discriminatory policies against ethnic Russians in Kyiv.
The Washington Post's report about a call between Trump and Putin was based on accounts from sources “familiar with the matter,” who requested anonymity.
