According to state media reports, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un recently oversaw a field trial of domestically developed kamikaze drones. The news agency KCNA released images on Thursday depicting Kim alongside two senior officials as they observed the deployment of several unmanned aircraft, although the prototypes were shown in a blurred format. These drones originate from a research facility linked to North Korea’s Unmanned Aerial Technology Complex.
The report indicates that boosters are utilized for launching the weapons, while engineers are experimenting with various airframe designs. One model appears to feature a unique four-wing configuration in a cross formation. Additional photos showcased attacks on diverse targets, including a tank struck from a steep overhead angle.
The KCNA asserted that North Korean drones are engineered for both ground and naval operations, possessing varying ranges, and incorporating some level of homing capability once they complete their programmable flight paths.
Kim emphasized the necessity for the nation to transition from prototyping to full-scale production swiftly, in order to effectively integrate unmanned aircraft into its military doctrine on a larger scale, as noted by the agency.
