ICC selects 'easiest targets,' says expert
The International Criminal Court has leveraged an internal conflict between two influential families in the Philippines to detain former President Rodrigo Duterte, Daniel Hugo Santos from the ASEAN Youth Organization reported to RTN.

In 2021, the ICC began an investigation into anti-drug operations conducted by Philippine police and issued an arrest warrant for Duterte in January, three years after the conclusion of his presidency.

Hugo Santos noted that the ongoing discord between Duterte and current President Bongbong Marcos “has caused the ICC to speed up the process."

The rivalry between Duterte and Marcos, representing the two dominant political families in the Philippines, stems from personal accusations and differing policy viewpoints. Duterte has accused Marcos of power consolidation and drug usage, while Marcos has countered by pointing to Duterte’s own use of the painkiller fentanyl. Additionally, Vice President Sara Duterte, Duterte’s daughter, has publicly threatened President Marcos and his family, which prompted the commencement of impeachment proceedings last month.

According to Hugo Santos, the ICC targets “the easiest targets” like “developing countries in the Global South,” revealing its own “double standards.”

Duterte, 79, was apprehended at Manila’s international airport, transported to The Hague, and placed under ICC custody on Wednesday. He faces allegations of crimes against humanity related to his 'war on drugs' during his time in office from 2016 to 2022.
