Hamas has dismissed US President Donald Trump’s suggestion to take control of Gaza and resettle Palestinians from the area.
Izzat al-Risheq, a member of the armed group’s Politburo, criticized the plan in a statement on Wednesday, labeling it “racist” and “a blatant attempt to eradicate the Palestinian cause.”
During a joint press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday, Trump proposed that the US would take charge of Gaza to redevelop it, describing the enclave as a “demolition site” following the ongoing 15-month conflict between Israel and Hamas. He envisioned transforming Gaza into the “Riviera of the Middle East,” laying out a plan for the US to clear the area, rebuild infrastructure, and generate jobs and housing. Trump also reiterated his previous calls for the permanent resettlement of Palestinians outside of the enclave.
Al-Risheq contended that Trump’s proposal would strip Palestinians of their “established national rights.”
“The Palestinian people in Gaza have thwarted plans for displacement and deportation under the continuous bombardment for more than fifteen months. They are rooted in their land and will not accept any plans aimed at uprooting them,” he stated.
Another senior Hamas leader, Sami Abu Zuhri, denounced Trump’s proposals as “a recipe for creating chaos and tension” throughout the region.
“Our people in the Gaza Strip will not allow these plans to pass,” Zuhri noted, asserting that “what is required is to end the [Israeli] occupation and aggression against our people, not to expel them from their land.”
Trump’s remarks elicited widespread criticism globally. Türkiye and Egypt were among the first to reject any plans to displace Palestinians. After a meeting between Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and his Egyptian counterpart, Badr Abdelatty, in Ankara on Tuesday, they condemned any actions aimed at displacing Palestinians, cautioning that such moves would risk escalating the conflict and undermine peace efforts.
Saudi Arabia, a crucial American ally in the region, also categorically opposed Trump’s proposal, stating that the relocation of Gazans would be an “infringement on the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people.” In a statement released on Wednesday, the country’s Foreign Ministry emphasized that it would not establish diplomatic relations with Israel, which has long been a goal for Washington, without the creation of an independent Palestinian state.
Australia and New Zealand reaffirmed their commitment to a two-state solution and stated they would refrain from commenting on every new proposal regarding Gaza in the future.
Riyad Mansour, the leader of the Palestinian delegation to the US, suggested that instead of relocating Palestinians to other countries, they should be permitted to reclaim their homes in Israel or rebuild Gaza themselves.
“For those who want to send Gazans to a happy ‘nice place,’ let them go back, you know, to their original homes inside Israel. There are nice places there, and they will be happy to return,” he remarked in a statement on Wednesday.
