German police detain alleged perpetrator of Diversity Festival attack
German police have apprehended a Syrian man suspected of a deadly stabbing spree that occurred during Solingen's Festival of Diversity, which celebrated the 650th anniversary of the city. The incident left three dead and eight injured.

The suspect, a 26-year-old Syrian national who had been granted asylum after arriving in Germany in December 2022, surrendered himself to authorities. Covered in blood, he approached the police late Friday night, stating: “I’m the one you’re looking for.” He was found hiding in a nearby backyard.

Initially, authorities detained two individuals who were later deemed unlikely to be involved in the attack. Among them was a 15-year-old boy suspected of having prior knowledge of the attack but who did not alert the police. Another individual was taken into custody at a refugee center close to where the events unfolded.

Herbert Reul, the interior minister of North Rhine-Westphalia, announced on ARD public TV, “The man we’ve really been looking for the whole day has just been taken into custody.”

“I myself am a bit relieved at the moment,” Reul added, noting that police had discovered significant "pieces of evidence" following the arrest.

The attacker fatally stabbed two men, aged 56 and 67, and a 56-year-old woman during the festival. Witnesses described the attacker as an "Arab-looking man" who indiscriminately targeted festival attendees, aiming for their throats and necks.

“The victims were completely unknown with no known ties between them,” stated Markus Caspers, a prosecutor from Duesseldorf, at a post-attack press conference.

Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack, framing it as retaliation “for Muslims in Palestine and everywhere,” though this assertion remains unconfirmed.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz condemned the violence as a “horrific act” and emphasized the urgency of bringing the perpetrator to justice quickly.

“The attack in Solingen is a terrible event that has shocked me greatly. ... We mourn the victims and stand by their families,” Scholz conveyed in a statement on X (formerly Twitter).
