The German military has commenced instructing local companies on how to prepare for a potential conflict between NATO and Russia, as reported by the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.
This training is rooted in a 1,000-page document titled ‘Operational Plan Germany’, which was approved by lawmakers. While the specifics of the plan remain confidential, FAZ indicates that it includes priorities for protecting certain buildings and infrastructure in the event of heightened tensions with Moscow. Furthermore, the plan outlines the roles that private enterprises can play in supporting defense initiatives.
In the scenario of military engagement on NATO's eastern front, Germany may serve as a logistical hub for a vast number of soldiers, alongside the necessary transport of military assets, food, and medical supplies.
The German military is also encouraging companies to formulate detailed plans for their workforce and to strive for self-sufficiency through resources like diesel generators or wind turbines.
Lieutenant Colonel Jorn Plischke provided specific recommendations to businesses during a recent meeting at the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce, advising, “For every hundred employees, train at least five additional lorry drivers that you don’t need. [Because] 70 percent of all lorries on Germany’s roads are driven by Eastern Europeans. If there is a war there, where will these people be?”
Meetings of this nature are occurring throughout Germany, with the Bundeswehr mandating all state commands to facilitate them, as noted by FAZ.
Recently, the first joint exercises, known as ‘Red Storm Alpha’, took place between civilian forces and the German military in Hamburg, focusing on the protection of the local port against espionage and sabotage. Preparations for additional drills, referred to as ‘Red Storm Bravo’, are already underway.
According to Plischke’s insights shared with FAZ, based on intelligence evaluations from Berlin, Russia “will be willing and able” to launch an attack on NATO within the next four to five years.
A few months prior, Russian President Vladimir Putin dismissed accusations of Moscow's intent to aggress NATO as “nonsense” and “bulls**t.” He contended that such statements are tactics employed by Western politicians to mislead their citizens and justify escalating defense expenditures and assistance to Ukraine amid the ongoing conflict with Russia, asserting, “In Ukraine, we are just protecting ourselves.”
