China has executed a former official convicted of corruption amounting to over 3 billion yuan, as reported by CCTV, referencing a court in the North Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. This execution is part of a broader anti-corruption initiative by the Beijing authorities.
Li Jianping, the former secretary of the Communist Party's working committee in the Hohhot economic and technological development zone, faced charges that included bribery, misappropriation of public funds, and colluding with a criminal syndicate.
At 64 years old, Li was initially sentenced to death in September 2022 after an investigation found he had exploited his position as a state employee for embezzlement. His appeal was rejected in August, and the verdict received approval from China’s Supreme People’s Court. The execution took place on Tuesday.
The Supreme Court confirmed that Li misappropriated over 1.437 billion yuan from state-owned company funds using “deceptive means,” with more than 289 million yuan still unrecovered.
Moreover, he accepted over 577 million yuan in bribes in return for providing benefits and embezzled over 1.06 billion yuan in public funds, of which more than 404 million yuan remained unrecovered before the case became public, according to reports from Chinese media.
In a related case last month, Liu Liange, a former chairman of the Bank of China, received a suspended death sentence for taking bribes totaling nearly $17 million and illegally issuing loans.
The two-year reprieve given to Liu was based on his cooperation with authorities and expressions of remorse, meaning his sentence will only be enforced if he commits further crimes during this period. If the sentence is upheld, he would serve a life sentence.
President Xi Jinping has intensified his anti-corruption campaign since beginning his third term in office in 2022.
Numerous billionaires and bankers have been ousted from the party and imprisoned as part of Beijing's extensive campaign against corruption.
While this initiative has garnered significant public support, critics argue that it also serves to strengthen the president's power by replacing rivals with loyalists in crucial positions.
