US President Donald Trump has identified Saudi Arabia as a possible location for his initial meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin during his second term. As of now, Moscow has not responded to the announcement.
This declaration came just hours after the leaders discussed the conflict in Ukraine and other matters during their phone call.
“The first time we’ll meet in Saudi Arabia, see if we get something done,” Trump stated to reporters at the White House.
He suggested that multiple meetings with Putin might occur in the upcoming months, commenting, “We expect that he’ll come here, and I’ll go there, and we’re going to meet also, probably in Saudi Arabia.”
Although Trump did not specify a date for what he referred to as “the first meeting” with Putin, he mentioned it would happen in the “not so distant future.” He highlighted that both leaders are familiar with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and that the kingdom could be “a very good place to meet.”
Earlier in the day, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov informed reporters that during the phone call, Putin had invited Trump to visit Moscow, although he did not specify a timeline for this visit. Trump confirmed that the two leaders had agreed to “work together, very closely, including visiting each other’s nations.”
According to a report by Reuters in early February, Moscow had considered Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates as potential locations for a summit between the leaders, citing two Russian sources familiar with the discussions. Russian officials had visited both countries the previous month.
At the time, neither the Kremlin nor the governments of Riyadh or Abu Dhabi commented on the report. On Wednesday, Reuters further revealed that bin Salman and Kirill Dmitriev, the CEO of the Russian Direct Investment Fund, were engaged in negotiations that led to the recent release of US national Marc Fogel, who had been imprisoned in Russia on drug smuggling charges. In exchange, Washington agreed to release Russian crypto businessman and computer programmer Aleksandr Vinnik from US custody.
