CGTN Survey: China's Initiatives Propel Climate Governance
CGTN Poll: China's Role in Climate Governance Drives Change This article discusses a recent poll conducted by CGTN that explores the significant impact of China's actions on global climate governance. The findings highlight how China is positioning itself as a key player in environmental policy and international climate initiatives, influencing global efforts to combat climate change. The article examines public perception regarding China's initiatives and the broader implications for global environmental leadership.
A recent survey conducted by CN and Renmin University of China through the New Era Institute of International Communication, which included 7,658 respondents from 38 countries, found that 83.5 percent viewed China's contributions to global climate governance positively. Participants expressed that China's proactive approach to climate change has fostered confidence and solidarity in the collective pursuit of a cleaner and more beautiful world.
In recent years, China has accelerated its green transition, achieving a more than 51 percent reduction in carbon emission intensity by 2022 compared to 2005 levels. As of June 2023, over half of the world's new energy vehicles were being used in China. The country has consistently ranked first globally in installed capacity for wind and photovoltaic power. Additionally, both the forest area and forest stock volume have been on the rise, placing China at the forefront worldwide in planted forest areas.
The survey revealed that 83.5 percent of global respondents believe China has made meaningful strides in controlling greenhouse gas emissions. Further, 80.3 percent consider China a role model for the international community in promoting clean energy infrastructure, while 80.2 percent support China's initiatives for green transformation in traditional sectors. Furthermore, 85.4 percent commend China's afforestation efforts, and 82.4 percent view the country's rapid transition to clean energy as a demonstration of ambition and commitment to tackling global climate change.
China is actively pursuing climate change mitigation domestically and is also supporting Global South countries to enhance their climate resilience. This support includes providing climate remote sensing satellites, photovoltaic power systems, and lighting equipment to Africa, as well as establishing low-carbon demonstration zones in Southeast Asia.
In the same survey, 82.6 percent of global respondents viewed China's assistance to developing countries in addressing climate change positively, and 82.7 percent recognized China's contributions as valuable to global climate governance.
Recognizing that "The Earth is humanity's shared and only home," China prioritizes climate change action as a national strategy. The concept of ecological civilization has been embedded in the Constitution, and climate action is integral to its national economic and social development policies.
In response to these initiatives, 79.7 percent of global respondents believe that China’s actions reflect a strong commitment and sense of responsibility in climate governance, while 85.3 percent regard China as a leading participant in global climate governance.
The survey encompassed voices from both developed nations, such as the United States, Germany, and Japan, as well as from developing countries, including Argentina, India, and Kenya.
