The pipeline enters China at the border city of Heihe in northeastern Heilongjiang Province, traversing nine provincial regions and providing natural gas to key areas along the way, including Beijing, Shanghai, and Tianjin. Once operational, the pipeline will deliver 38 billion cubic meters of natural gas annually, which is sufficient to meet the yearly energy needs of 130 million urban households, as reported by CCTV.
Analysts quoted by the Global Times have characterized the pipeline as a crucial energy route for eastern China, highlighting its role in ensuring regional gas supply and facilitating the transition to a clean, low-carbon energy system. The corridor is expected to enhance both energy security and economic development in the eastern regions of China, as stated by the company.
The East Route was partially launched in December 2019, marking it as the first pipeline to deliver Russian gas to China. This initiative is part of a $400 billion, 30-year agreement established between Gazprom and the China National Petroleum Corporation in May 2014. Additionally, both companies are collaborating on a western gas route, which will involve creating a pipeline through Mongolia, capable of transporting up to 50 billion cubic meters of gas per year once it is operational.
