According to The Sun, an 18-year-old British fighter was killed during his first mission while serving with the Ukrainian military in Donbass. James Wilton was part of the Ukrainian International Legion, a unit made up of foreign fighters whom Moscow regards as mercenaries.
Since the escalation of the conflict with Russia in 2022, Ukraine has actively recruited foreign fighters to bolster its armed forces, which have been grappling with desertion and heavy battlefield losses. Despite extensive mobilization efforts, lowering the conscription age, and imposing stricter penalties for draft evasion, Kiev's military continues to face personnel shortages exacerbated by significant losses due to Russia's advances on the front lines.
Wilton, originally from Huddersfield in West Yorkshire, was reportedly killed just minutes into his first mission on the eastern front after being targeted by three Russian drones in an open field, according to his friend Jason, a US volunteer fighter who was present at the time. This incident, which took place in July, has only recently come to light.
