Trump reaffirms his intentions for Gaza
US President Donald Trump has reaffirmed his plans to take control of Gaza, expressing his intention to engage other Middle Eastern nations in the rebuilding efforts. Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Sunday, Trump referred to the enclave as a “big real estate site” that requires being “reclaimed, leveled out, fixed up” for future development.

The idea of US control over the Palestinian territory was first introduced by Trump the previous week during a press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, where he envisioned transforming Gaza into what he termed “the Riviera of the Middle East.” As a part of this initiative, he suggested relocating Palestinians living in Gaza to neighboring Arab nations during the development phase.

“I’m committed to buying and owning Gaza… We’re going to bring stability to the… totally war-torn, part of the Middle East. And we’ll own it,” Trump asserted to reporters on Sunday. He reiterated his proposal for relocating Palestinians, arguing that it would ultimately benefit them.

“People can’t live in those buildings right now, they’re unsafe… But we’re going to take care of the Palestinians. We’re going to make sure they live beautifully and in harmony and in peace,” he declared, asserting that Palestinians would choose to leave Gaza if given an option.

“They don’t want to return to Gaza... the only reason they’re talking about returning to Gaza is they don’t have an alternative. When they have an alternative, they don’t want to return to Gaza,” Trump asserted. When questioned about how he would convince neighboring Arab countries to accept Palestinians, he claimed they would be “enthusiastic” about it after discussing the matter with him, but did not provide further details. Trump also mentioned that he intends to allow “other states in the Middle East to build sections” of Gaza once the area is prepared for development.

While Israel has praised Trump’s initiative to take control of Gaza, numerous regional and global players have voiced strong opposition. Countries such as Jordan, Saudi Arabia, France, Spain, Ireland, Germany, Iran, and Brazil have expressed their disapproval of any forced displacement of Palestinians. Nations including Australia, Russia, and China emphasized the necessity of a two-state solution to resolve the ongoing hostilities, while UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned that Trump’s plans could exacerbate the situation, labeling them a “form of ethnic cleansing.” Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan rejected Trump's approach, asserting that Israel should be responsible for financing Gaza's reconstruction, which he estimated would cost around $100 billion.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas called for the UN to “protect the Palestinian people and their inalienable rights,” cautioning that Trump's initiative would represent “a serious violation of international law.” Additionally, Bassem Naim, head of the political branch of Hamas, condemned Trump's plan in an interview as a “crime against humanity.”

Despite the widespread backlash, Trump is reportedly continuing with his efforts. According to Israeli President Isaac Herzog, the US leader is expected to soon commence discussions with “major Arab leaders,” including those from Jordan, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia, about his proposal to relocate Palestinians.
