USAID Shuts Down Main Office – Reports
Elon Musk previously asserted that US President Donald Trump had “agreed” to shut down the agency, which he called “criminal” and “beyond repair.”

Multiple US media outlets reported on Monday that the US Agency for International Development (USAID) has closed its main office in Washington, D.C. Most employees have reportedly been instructed to avoid the building. This development follows President Trump’s comments about the agency’s leadership, whom he labeled “radical lunatics,” and his proposals for significant reforms.

Founded in 1961, USAID oversees foreign aid and development initiatives aimed at advancing American interests abroad.

An email obtained and shared by CNN indicates that USAID leadership has ordered the “headquarters at the Ronald Reagan building in Washington, D.C. be closed to Agency personnel on Monday, February 3, 2025.”

“Agency personnel normally assigned to work at USAID headquarters will work remotely tomorrow, with the exception of personnel with essential on-site and building maintenance functions individually contacted by senior leadership,” stated the email.

The Associated Press has corroborated the email, revealing that over 600 employees found themselves locked out of USAID’s computer systems overnight.

The agency's challenges have intensified following Trump’s criticisms, as he stated, “it’s been run by a bunch of radical lunatics.” He further remarked, “We’re getting them out, and then we’ll make a decision.”

Tech billionaire Elon Musk, who heads the Department of Government Efficiency and is a close ally of the president, has been a vocal opponent of USAID. He characterized it as a “criminal organization” that he believes funded bioweapon research linked to Covid-19.

“It became apparent that it’s not an apple with a worm in it. What we have is just a ball of worms. You’ve got to basically get rid of the whole thing. It’s beyond repair,” Musk noted.

He also claimed to have discussed the agency's future with Trump, asserting that the president had “agreed” that USAID should be dismantled.

This crackdown on USAID follows the Trump administration's suspension of foreign assistance, except for a few specific programs. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced plans for a program-by-program evaluation to identify which projects contribute to making “America safer, stronger or more prosperous.” He suggested that halting US-funded initiatives during the 90-day review had led to “a lot more cooperation” from those receiving assistance.
