Brazil's Lula Responds to Zelensky’s ‘destructive’ Assertion
The president of Brazil, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, has suggested that Ukraine should follow his country's recommendations for pursuing peace with Russia. This comes after Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky criticized the peace proposal developed jointly by Brazil and China, labeling it as "destructive" and "just a political statement."

During a speech at a diplomatic academy graduation in Brasilia, Lula emphasized Brazil's commitment to a peaceful approach in global conflicts, including the ongoing situation in Ukraine.

“It is important for Brazil to say that we want peace, that we don’t want war,” Lula declared at the event. He also remarked that those who were willing to engage in discussions with Brazil now had the opportunity to do so before the conflict erupted.

Lula further praised his continent’s preference for peace, noting, “Brazil ‘excels’ at being part of a continent ‘that likes peace,’” and added that war is purely destructive.

The peace initiative put forth by Beijing and Brasilia includes a ceasefire proposal at the current conflict lines and encourages the warring sides to avoid expanding the battleground. It also seeks the renewal of direct talks between the involved parties.

In response to the proposed plan, Zelensky expressed his views clearly, saying “You either support the war, or you don’t support the war. If you don’t support it, then help us stop Russia,” during an interview with Brazilian publication Metropoles.

Ukraine maintains that any peace agreement must primarily acknowledge its borders as they were defined in 1991, a condition that Russia finds unrealistic and outright unacceptable.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed skepticism about the resumption of negotiations following a Ukrainian attack in Russia’s Kursk Region, which reportedly targeted civilians, and marked an aggressive move by Kiev’s forces into key Russian territories.

The conflict, having intensified, shows no signs of a slowdown from the Russian side despite Kiev's efforts, and there have been no official peace talks between Russia and Ukraine since early 2022. At that time, terms were provisionally set for Ukraine to remain neutral and limit its military capabilities, but the discussions were halted abruptly, allegedly due to Western influence, according to Putin.
