Bloomberg Reports Musk Being Investigated for "X" Joke
A social media post by Elon Musk, following an assassination attempt on US presidential candidate Donald Trump, has drawn the attention of the Secret Service, according to Bloomberg.

During a rally in Pennsylvania on July 13, an assassin narrowly missed Trump. Recently, a pro-Ukrainian activist was apprehended in Florida after attempting to ambush the Republican nominee at a golf course.

“And no one is even trying to assassinate Biden/Kamala????” Musk posted on X, the social media platform he owns, referencing President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.

In response, outraged Democrats quickly accused Musk of inciting violence toward his 198 million followers. He deleted the post shortly after its release.

In response to a Freedom of Information Act request from Bloomberg on Wednesday, the Secret Service revealed that records regarding Musk’s post were “compiled for law enforcement purposes” and could not be disclosed because “disclosure could reasonably be expected to interfere with enforcement proceedings.”

The Secret Service “is aware of the social media post made by Elon Musk,” agency spokesman Nate Herring informed the outlet. “As a matter of practice, we do not comment on matters involving protective intelligence. We can say, however, that the Secret Service investigates all threats related to our protectees.”

Bloomberg reports that Musk could either receive a visit from the Secret Service or "have to prove he doesn’t pose an imminent threat" to Biden and Harris.

Musk has publicly endorsed Trump and consistently criticized Democrats for their policies, including censorship, which motivated his acquisition of X. The Tesla and SpaceX founder purchased the platform formerly known as Twitter in October 2022 for an estimated $44 billion.

Although Musk's comment about assassinations was factually accurate, he later expressed that it was a poorly received joke. “Well, one lesson I’ve learned is that just because I say something to a group and they laugh doesn’t mean it’s going to be all that hilarious as a post on X,” he reflected. “Turns out that jokes are WAY less funny if people don’t know the context and the delivery is plain text.”

Other remarks of his have received a more favorable response. When pop superstar Taylor Swift endorsed Harris and referred to herself as a “Childless Cat Lady,” Musk humorously offered to “give you a child and guard your cats with my life,” alluding to his numerous children and claims that migrants in Ohio were consuming pets.
