Biden’s staff ‘hid his decline,’ according to WaPo
The Washington Post has acknowledged that previous assertions regarding the health of US President Joe Biden were valid.

In an editorial published on Tuesday, the editorial board asserted that Biden should not have pursued reelection, attributing the failure to his staff for hiding his health issues until it became untenable. They commended Biden's “profoundly selfless decision” to withdraw from the race, allowing the Democrats to potentially replace him with Kamala Harris.

“In retrospect, Mr. Biden should not have sought reelection. The June 27 debate was worse than just a bad night, as the president maintained afterward. The 81-year-old had shown signs of slipping for a long time, but his inner circle worked to conceal his decline,” the Post editors expressed.

The editorial argued that the country would have been better served if Biden had stepped aside after the “surprisingly good showing” of the Democrats in the 2022 midterms. They suggested, “a diminished Mr. Biden, at the head of a dispirited party, would likely have lost in November” had he continued his campaign.

Biden “deserves recognition” for relinquishing his position and providing opportunities for a new generation of leaders, “albeit via internal party machinations rather than the ballot box,” according to the Post.

While Biden has left the race, he continues to serve as president until January. The Democrats' platform still promotes “a second Biden term,” mentioning him 287 times across its 92 pages, compared to Harris being referenced only 32 times.

As the oldest-ever US president to take office, Biden faced allegations of senility and dementia during the 2020 campaign, with his physical and cognitive decline becoming more pronounced during his presidency. These claims were largely dismissed by White House staff and much of the legacy media, who attributed concerns to a childhood stutter.

Supporters continued to argue that the president was “sharp as a tack” even after the June 27 debate, with Biden claiming that only God could make him quit. However, in mid-July, he was reportedly flown from Las Vegas to his home in Delaware, apparently due to COVID-19.

By the end of that week, a letter on his personal X (formerly Twitter) account announced his withdrawal from the presidential race. A subsequent post from the same account endorsed Harris as his successor, with insiders noting the influence of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi in this decision.

“They staged a coup against the president of the United States,” former president and current Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump remarked in early August. “It’s like you’re in a fight with somebody, and you’re really winning, and they take him out and they put somebody else in. Nobody ever heard of this before. This is a coup,” he added.
