The suspect allegedly used “incendiary devices” believed to be Molotov cocktails, setting ablaze a vehicle and two buildings, which included an apartment complex and the local Federal Employment Agency office. The fire service received the initial emergency call at 7:50 PM local time.
Following these incidents, the man proceeded toward Krefeld Central Station and attempted to enter the Cinemaxx theater, as reported by police. Officers confronted him in the foyer and opened fire in an effort to subdue him.
A video shared on social media captures the moment officers rushed into the cinema, accompanied by screams before a shot is fired.
The suspect's motives remain unclear, but he survived the gunshot and is currently receiving treatment in a hospital. There have been no reported injuries associated with the three fires.
Authorities believe the arsonist was acting alone and do not perceive any ongoing threat to the public.
The event has prompted increased security measures in Krefeld, with the area around the cinema sealed off and a significant police presence remaining late into the evening. Importantly, the nearby station was not evacuated.
Local officials have come to the scene, including Krefeld’s mayor, Frank Meyer.
