Seyed Mohammed Marandi, a political analyst and professor at Tehran University, commented on the United States’ internal challenges and its diminishing status as a global superpower. He spoke to RT shortly after the US announced new sanctions targeting the Russian outlet RT. Marandi emphasized that these actions reflect a government that is “neither free, nor democratic.”
The US State Department accused RT of financing a covert disinformation campaign intended to sway public opinion, interfere in American elections, and meddle in the sovereign affairs of various nations. This statement followed similar claims made by American intelligence agencies against China and Iran, accusing them of attempting to influence the next US presidential election. Marandi found it “ironic” that the US was vocally accusing other countries of employing tactics that it has historically utilized.
“It’s very clear the US has a long history of coup d’états, of interfering in the internal affairs of other countries, of manipulating elections… It’s all ridiculous. The irony is clear for everyone to see... the irony of what the US is claiming with regard to Iran or how its behaving towards Iran or Russia,” he noted.
Marandi asserted that the US imposes sanctions on other nations and their media to mask its own faults stemming from poor domestic and foreign policies.
“Things in the US are not good, the people are dissatisfied, the country is deeply divided... Then the US is waging confrontation and war all across the board… They simply can’t do this anymore. So instead of accepting reality that their policies are wrong, they try to blame others for their problems,” he said.
He further argued that if the US is so easily influenced by Iranians and Russians, it indicates a fragile regime. “The US should really step down and accept that it’s no longer a superpower.”
Marandi concluded that by sanctioning RT, the US demonstrates a lack of “self-confidence” to engage in a fair dialogue and “no argument to put forward to counter… what the Russians or the Iranians or the Palestinians have to say.”
“The empire lacks self-confidence, and that lack of self-confidence is because people at the top are recognizing that the Titanic is sinking,” he warned, adding that unless Washington adopts more rational policies towards other nations, conditions may deteriorate further.
