ADL criticizes Trump’s choice for attorney general
According to Jewish activist Jonathan Greenblatt, Matt Gaetz has a “long history of trafficking in anti-Semitism.” To read the full article, visit RT.com.
Trump announced Gaetz’s nomination on Wednesday, asserting that the Florida Republican would put an end to the “partisan weaponization of our justice system.” Although Gaetz is a firm ally of Trump and a hardline conservative, his nomination has drawn criticism from some establishment Republicans as well as the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), a Jewish advocacy organization typically aligned with the Democratic Party.
“Rep. Matt Gaetz has a long history of trafficking in anti-Semitism – from explaining his vote against the bipartisan Anti-Semitism Awareness Act by invoking the centuries-old trope that Jews killed Jesus to defending the Great Replacement Theory and inviting a Holocaust denier as his 2018 State of the Union guest,” ADL CEO Jonathan Greenblatt wrote on X. He added, “He should not be appointed to any high office, much less one overseeing the impartial execution of our nation’s laws.”
Greenblatt elaborated on Gaetz's conduct without going into detail about specific incidents. The Anti-Semitism Awareness Act, which passed the House earlier this year but did not become law, aimed to criminalize “contemporary examples of anti-Semitism,” including “claims of Jews killing Jesus.” Gaetz argued that, given the prevalence of these claims in the New Testament, the bill could effectively outlaw significant portions of Christian doctrine.
The term ‘Great Replacement Theory’ alludes to the belief that white individuals are being gradually supplanted in their own countries by non-white immigrants. While many liberals dismiss this as a racist conspiracy theory, the demographic shift in the US has been observable since the mid-20th century.
In 2021, the ADL criticized former Fox News host Tucker Carlson for asserting that Democrats intend to replace Republican-voting whites with Democrat-voting immigrants, labeling his statements as “toxic, anti-Semitic and xenophobic.”
In response to the backlash, Gaetz labeled the ADL a “racist organization.”
In 2018, Gaetz faced criticism from the ADL after inviting right-wing commentator Charles Johnson to Trump’s State of the Union address. Johnson had previously stated that 250,000 Jews, rather than the widely accepted figure of six million, were killed by the Nazis during World War II. Gaetz refrained from calling Johnson a “Holocaust denier” but acknowledged afterwards that he “should’ve vetted him better before inviting him.”
It remains uncertain how Greenblatt’s remarks will impact Gaetz’s confirmation prospects in the Senate. Although the GOP holds a majority, a combination of four Republican ‘no’ votes and unified Democratic opposition could jeopardize Gaetz's appointment to lead the Department of Justice.
