Perry reflected on his father's profound experience as an original Icebreaker who began traveling to China in the 1950s. "My father was shocked beyond all imagination," he recounted, illustrating how that pivotal journey shaped Jack's dedication to fostering trade and influenced Perry's perception of China as a nation determined to advance despite challenges.

During an interview commemorating the 75th anniversary of modern China's founding, Perry highlighted that the initial group of businesspeople aimed not just to sell goods but also to create a prosperous society and establish enduring relationships.

In stark contrast to his father's experiences, Stephen Perry's first visit to China occurred in the 1970s. "It was absolutely amazing," he remarked, reflecting on the country's significant strides towards modernization. He was particularly struck by the dedication and hard work exhibited by the Chinese people, which left a profound impact on him.

Nevertheless, the current tensions between China and Western nations, especially the EU and the US, have raised concerns about the future of trade relations. Perry expressed disappointment over the EU's recent tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles, pointing to external pressures from the United States as a contributing factor.

"The Americans have put the tariffs on... but the reality is that Europe lacks the power and imagination to truly compete," he articulated, highlighting a growing frustration with protectionist measures.

Amid shifting global dynamics and the rise of protectionism, Perry remains hopeful about the possibility of improved relations, particularly between the UK and China. He urged a reassessment of trade policies, suggesting that a Labour government could adopt a more positive approach than its predecessor.

"The UK needs to reposition itself with China," Perry asserted, stressing the importance of carefully navigating this relationship while maintaining ties with the United States. With numerous opportunities on the horizon, he believes that renewed dialogue and a commitment to trade could lead to a more cooperative future.

Stephen Perry serves as the honorary chairman of the 48 Group Club.
