Zelensky Turns Down Trump's Proposal for Peace
Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has dismissed a proposal from U.S. President-elect Donald Trump for an immediate ceasefire and peace talks between Ukraine and Russia.

During a meeting in Paris on Saturday that also included French President Emmanuel Macron, Trump took to his Truth Social platform to advocate for an “immediate ceasefire and negotiations should begin” to resolve the Ukraine conflict, stating that Ukraine “would like to make a deal and stop the madness.”

Zelensky, however, clarified this sentiment in a lengthy post on X the following day, asserting that the conflict “cannot simply end with a piece of paper and a few signatures.” He emphasized, “A ceasefire without guarantees can be reignited at any moment... To ensure that Ukrainians no longer suffer losses, we must guarantee the reliability of peace and not turn a blind eye to occupation.”

He also highlighted the plight of millions in occupied Ukrainian territories, firmly ruling out any territorial concessions to Moscow as part of a peace agreement. “It is precisely such peace through strength that we discuss with all our partners, as well as the steps and guarantees needed for the people and the state attacked by Russia,” Zelensky noted.

Trump has claimed that he could resolve the Ukraine conflict within a day of returning to the White House and has criticized the outgoing U.S. administration for its level of military support to Ukraine. Reports suggest he may leverage U.S. aid to Kiev as a means to impose a freeze on the conflict along existing battle lines.

In response, Moscow has consistently deemed a freeze of the conflict unacceptable, insisting that any resolution requires Ukraine to withdraw its military from Russian territory, respect the rights of its Russian-speaking population, and adhere to a stance of neutrality.
