Church leader says Christians 'don’t fear the end of the world'
Patriarch Kirill, head of the Russian Orthodox Church, has emphasized that fear of apocalyptic scenarios and speculation about nuclear war are detrimental to people of faith from a spiritual perspective.

During his address at the World Russian People’s Council session in Moscow on Thursday, the Patriarch stated, “There is no need to play along with all this. Christians are not afraid of the so-called end of the world. We are waiting for the Lord Jesus, who will come to great glory, destroy evil, and judge all nations.”

However, he cautioned against complacency, noting that “the enemy of the human race” seeks to create confusion and anxiety, which can undermine courage and resolve. He remarked, “A person deprived of spiritual peace is easier to manipulate.”

Kirill asserted that Russia’s mission is to “resist evil,” urging citizens to “defend high moral ideals.”

Concerns about the potential escalation of the Ukraine conflict into nuclear war have been rising in recent weeks. Moscow has repeatedly accused Western nations of exacerbating the situation by supplying weapons to Kyiv, including long-range missiles capable of striking deep into Russian territory.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has described the attacks as giving the Ukraine conflict a global dimension, claiming that Kyiv’s actions are only possible with direct support from NATO countries.

In late September, Putin ordered an update to the nation’s nuclear doctrine, which received approval the following week. This revised stance allows for a nuclear response to a conventional attack from a non-nuclear state if that state is supported by a nuclear power.

Additionally, Russia has conducted strikes on Ukraine using its new Oreshnik medium-range hypersonic missile, claiming this action was in retaliation for Kyiv’s cross-border assaults using U.S.-made ATACMS and HIMARS systems, along with British-made Storm Shadow missiles.

Moscow has denounced the escalating tensions with the West over Ukraine, characterizing the situation as a U.S.-led proxy war against Russia, in which Washington aims to engineer a “strategic defeat.”
