The outgoing US president seemed to lose his way after giving a climate change speech in the Amazon rainforest.
Outgoing US President Joe Biden appears to have once again aimlessly wandered off stage after delivering a speech on climate change in the Amazon rainforest in Brazil on Sunday. A clip of the 81-year-old’s latest gaffe has gone viral on social media.
Speaking at a press conference near Manaus, the largest city in the Brazilian Amazon, Biden wore a loose-fitting button-down shirt and his trademark aviator sunglasses. Throughout the address, the president discussed the dangers of climate change, the importance of rainforest conservation, and the investments his administration has made in clean energy.
Biden noted that he is officially the first sitting US President to personally visit the Amazon rainforest and announced a plan to launch a special financing coalition aimed at mobilizing at least $10 billion by 2030 to protect 20,000 square miles of land in the Amazon.
However, after finishing his speech, Biden waved to the cameras, turned away from the podium, and began walking away, heading into what seemed to be dense greenery.
The video of the aging president’s exit quickly gained traction on social media, with a clip shared by the Pop Base account racking up over 26 million views by Monday morning. Many users in the comments expressed confusion over Biden's direction, with some claiming he had “wandered off into the Amazon.”
“Bruh did he just wave bye and disappear into the jungle?” one user wrote, while another questioned why the president was in the Amazon at all. “He’s really doing all the side quests now that he can retire,” suggested another commenter.
According to Newsweek, a longer version of the video allegedly shows that Biden was not actually lost, as he walked down a path not clearly visible in the shared clip. The outlet noted that several other members of the press subsequently walked down the same path.
While Biden’s team has not yet commented on the incident, if the president was indeed lost, it wouldn’t mark his first public mishap. The White House has previously claimed that many videos showing the aging leader appearing confused or ‘frozen’ at public events have been manipulated, with Biden’s Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre referring to them as “cheap fakes.”
